Information about Storage Heaters and How They Work

What is a Storage Heater and can I use a new LOT 20 heater on a single Economy 7 or Economy 10 supply.

A storage heater is a heater designed to operate using cheaper off-peak electricity and to store this heat for release later on.

There are now three main types of storage heaters available from us, now that the new LOT 20 regulations are taking effect on our UK stocks.

The older Standard Manual and Automatic Control Storage Heaters stopped being manufactured in December 2017- This is also the case with the old combination storage heater models - with their inbuilt convector heater.

These types have now been phased out, no longer manufactured and are replaced by new LOT 20 compliant Smart Storage Heaters and High Heat retention models.

  • Fan assisted versions - With the stored Heat Distributed by a Dynamic Silent Fan are still available from our stock and can be simply controlled by an external manual thermostat, or you can add WIFI control.
  • ECOSSH Smart Storage Heaters - Lot 20 Compliant with better heat retention and more accurate controls for energy savings compared to older models of standard heaters.

How Do Storage Heaters Work

Off-peak electricity is supplied to your house, usually overnight when demand for electricity nationally is low. These lower cost electric tariffs known as ‘off-peak' or "economy 7" give you electricity at a cheaper price than standard daytime tariff' electricity.

You do need to be on an off peak tariff which requires a separate off-peak electrical circuit and meter dedicated to operating the storage heaters. This is only switched on during the off-peak time period which is only at certain times of the day or night dictated by your electricity. supplier. The modern LOT 20 compliant heaters are designed to be wired with two seperate supplies, an off peak economy tarfiif and a standard tariff. However when using an Elnur ECOSSH or ECOHHR you can use a single supply in the circumstances shown below;

In real terms, by using a Elnur Ecombi HHR or SSH with a single power supply, an installer will:

  • Save time and money when installing an Elnur storage heater.
  • Mean no work required to channel walls or fit surface trunking for additional supplies.
  • Potentially not have to install a new distribution board.
  • Reduce costs for you the consumer resulting in the installation being more affordable.

Replacing a standard storage heater for a Elnur ECOHHR or Elnur ECOSSH and using a single supply.

1.There must be a single meter installed and the house must be on an "unrestricted" E7 or E10 tariff  variant from the energy provider, which allows the whole house supply to operate 24/7 and charge the offpeak tariff price for all consumption during the off-peak period(s) and the higher tariff price during all otherhours.

Note: Your current energy supplier should be consulted to confirm if the meter is the correct type and if the tariff type as detailed above is in current operation or is available from them in their area.

2.With the correct meter installed and tariff in use, wiring changes can be done at the heating consumer unit or split load consumer unit where the storage heaters are connected. The supply to the storage heaters side of the consumer unit can now be changed to the same household supply. No timers or contactors are needed when supplying the heaters as all timings will be controlled at the storage heater.

Note: It is important that the timing of the off peak period matches the timing set on the heaters other wise running costs will be higher.

3.On the heaters:- The storage heater supply can be connected to the restricted terminals in the storage heater and the unrestricted terminals can then be linked to the restricted terminals. Spade connectors on the terminal block allow for easy link connection although wiring can also be made via the terminal block itself.

Note: Although the same cable flex and isolator switch from the old storage heater can be used we recommend replacing as a matter of course as you don't know how long they have been used and would be the first point for failure.

Replacing a standard storage heater for a Elnur ECOHHR or Elnur ECOSSH and connecting to a THTC tariff.

This type of meter has three connections, one THTC economy supply, one 24hr supply and one 24hr economy supply designed normally for water heaters and panel heaters.
1.Wiring changes can be done at the heating consumer unit or split load consumer unit where the heaters are connected. Your electrician will need to disconnect the THTC supply to the storage heater side of the consumer unit and reconnect with the 24hr economy supply.

Note: With this supply being 24hr economy the default 00:00 to 07:00 economy timing on the heater can be used.

2.On the heaters:- The storage heater supply can be connected to the restricted terminals in the storage heater and the unrestricted terminals can then be linked to the restricted terminals. Spade connectors on the terminal block allow for easy link connection although wiring can also be made via the terminal block itself.

Note: Although the same cable flex and isolator switch from the old storage heater can be used we recommend replacing as a matter of course as you don't know how long they have been used and would be the first point for failure.

Note:- In all cases when using a single supply connection for Elnur Ecombi HHR & SSH storage heaters, if a heater is required in a new location where no previous storage heater circuit exists, the new single
supply circuit must come directly from the Distribution Board, solely serve the new storage heater, have a 20amp MCB and RCD protection.

All new Electrical installations must be undertaken by a competent person, meet the current regulations and be tested/certified.

General Operating Principles.

The electricity is used to gradually heat special bricks made from a very high density material, which absorbs the heat generated during charging, which stores the heat for use during the next day.

Storage heaters use high levels of modern insulation material to retain this heat for as long as possible.

When the off-peak period finishes the stored heat is then released into the room in a controlled way over the course of the day.

Benefits of Storage Heating.

Modern Elnur Ecombi SSH models and their High Heat Retention (HHR) Storage Heaters include modern control systems including their abilty to automatically adjust charging to suit the climate and heat demands on a daily basis. The HHR models are also fan assisted to aid and reduce warm up times and both have a built in temperature sensor sensitive to 0.1°C. They offer no maintenance heating with no pipes, boiler or flue required and a heating option with a long life, to give give good service and return on the initial investment.
